Why Do Yorkshire Terriers Make Good Pets?
Yorkshire Terriers can make a wonderful addition to any family home. They are one of the most popular breeds of dogs, both in North America and around the world. So, what makes these little dogs so popular? Well, I own Yorkie called Flash, and there are many reasons why he makes a great addition to our home.
The Yorkshire Terrier would make a wonderful pet for most people. However, they do possess some traits that some may not like. In this article, I’ll look at answering the question “Do Yorkshire Terriers make good pets”. So, continue reading to find out more.
How small is too small for a Yorkie?
The Yorkshire terrier is a small breed. Because of their small size, they are versatile as far as the type of living space required. They are fun-loving and peppy and are very loyal to their families. They have a sweet temperament, and if they aren’t too small, will make good pets around children.
Yorkshire Terrier Hair And Coat Care
A Yorkie’s coat does not shed. Their hair is similar to human hair, and they don’t have an undercoat. Their coats, however, do require a lot of brushing so that it does not become a tangled, matted mess. They also require much more frequent bathing than other dogs. I usually bathe my Yorkie at least once a week.
Because they have a coat that is similar to human hair many people with allergies are able to be around Yorkies without having an allergic reaction. It’s also nice not getting dog or cat hair all over your furniture and clothes.
Yorkshire Terrier Eyes And Ears Care
You will also have to pay close attention to their eyes and ears. They tend to have so much hair on their face that it can get in their eyes and cause watering. You will need to wash around their eyes a couple of times a day. You certainly don’t want your Yorkie to get an eye infection.
If you don’t like to groom your Yorkie yourself, you can take your Yorkie and have them professionally groomed. Groomers will make sure there are no mats in their hair, give them a trim, a bath, check their ears, trim their nails, and express their anal glands. I usually take my Yorkie to the groomer a couple of times a year. In between times, I do his grooming myself. I don’t mind trimming hair, cutting nails, and brushing, etc.
If you are thinking about a pet, consider the Yorkie. As a Yorkie owner myself, I can confirm they get along well with just about everyone, including other pets. Plus, they will make you laugh and smile with their antics.
