How to train your Yorkie to sit

Teaching your Yorkie the sit command is something that all dogs should know, and one of the very first commands that they should learn when you begin the process of training your dog. It’s vital that you take the time to teach them this, so pay attention and follow the steps below to have your dog learn a new trick in no time.

Step One

Take your clicker and have some doggy treats at hand then wait until your Yorkie sits on his own accord. This is one trick that dogs love because they have to figure out exactly what they must do in order to get a treat. Next, your Yorkie is probably going to start doing all kinds of things to try and do what is needed to get the treat, but your job is to make sure that you don’t give him any attention until he sits. And as soon as he does this use the clicker again then give him a treat. Make sure that the first treat that you give him is large in quantity so that he is motivated to figure out what he needs to do in order to get more.

Step Two

Make sure that once your Yorkie gets their treat that you ignore them until they sit again. That said, when your Yorkie sits just use the clicker and reward them with a treat. Now around this time, your dog is going to get a little annoyed because he just can’t figure out what he needs to do in order to get the treat consistently. However, don’t give in, just remain consistent with your efforts. Eventually, and after much patience, your Yorkie will realise that to get the treat he just needs to sit.

Step Three

Once your Yorkie realises that they just need to sit in order to get a new doggy treat, then you just need to say the word ‘sit’ before you click and treat. Keep on doing this until eventually, they will sit on your command.
